Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are small groups?

Small groups are gatherings of about 6 -12 people with a designated leader.  They are open to anyone interested in investigating Christianity, growing spiritually, or focusing on specific topics.  Groups meet in homes all around the community at various times throughout the week.

Why does Atlee do small groups?

We do small groups because we want Atlee to be a place where no one stands alone.

A small group offers a place to develop close connected relationships with others.  We believe that life change happens best in an environment that models the pattern of the New Testament Church.

What kinds of small groups are there?

Groups  generally fall into one of four categories:  Study groups, Common Interest groups, Seeker groups, or Support groups

Seeker groups are for those investigating Christianity and need answers to tough questions.  Study groups are for those  studying a chosen topic together, such as a book of the bible, or a book by a contemporary author. Special Interest groups appeal to those gathering around a common interest such as scrap booking, motorcycling or parenting. Support groups are for those who desire support and encouragement for personal areas of need such as grief, drug abuse, and chronic illness.

We also have ministry teams that meet together in small groups such as the drama team, music team, technical team, and student ministries.

Why should I join a small group?

So you will become connected to others and grow in your spiritual life.

Once I’ve attended a group, do I have to stay in the same group?

No, the point is to find the right fit for you!  Let your group leader help you find another group to attend or contact Pam Harris to receive help finding another group.

What happens in small group meetings?

People in the group meet together in a home or at the church for discussion, sharing, support, encouragement, prayer and FUN!  Depending on your group, you will spend time on the topic or interest of the group, and also will have time to socialize and get to know others better.

How long do small groups meet and when do they meet?

Most groups meet together for about 1 ½ hours on a weekly basis, but this can vary depending on the nature of the group.  There are groups meeting every night of the week at various times in various locations.  Check the calendar and directory to find a group that fits your needs and schedule.  There is a place for you in an Atlee small group!

How can I join a small group?

You can join a small group by finding a group to attend and going!  To find a group you can consult the small group calendar or directory on this webpage, ask people you know that go to church with you for recommendations, seek help at “The Connection” desk on Sunday morning or call the Small Groups Director, Pam Harris, at 730-3676.  Feel free to e-mail groups@atleechurch.org for more information.

What about child care?

Each group addresses this issue as needed.  Ask the group leader about child care provisions.

What is a small group leader?

A small group leader is someone who facilitates a small group.  They are a member of the church, or in the membership process, and have received small group leader training.

Can I lead a small group?

You can lead a small group if you have a desire in your heart to share the small group experience with others and a willingness to facilitate the group.  You do not have to be a teacher or leader, just someone willing to invest the time needed to facilitate discussion and caring for others.  We can help you choose a comfortable format and show you the many options for materials to use in your small group.

What is a small group apprentice?

A small group apprentice is someone who is a leader in training.  They are learning to lead by observation, instruction and practice in a real small group setting alongside their small group leader.

How do I start a small group?

Call Pam Harris at 730-3676 or e-mail to groups@atleechurch.org.

What is a host home?

A host home is a place where the small group meets together on a regular basis.  The host is not necessarily the person responsible for leading the group.

What does a host have to do?

A host is someone who is willing to open their home and provide hospitality to the small group members.

What is the “empty chair”?

At each small group meeting there should be an empty chair placed among the group.  It serves as a visible reminder that there is someone we know that could benefit by being in a small group.  It should encourage us to invite them to join us in sharing the small group experience.  Who do you know that could fill the empty chair?
