30But
the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who
belonged to their sect complained to his disciples,
“Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and

doctor, but the sick. 32I
have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to
repentance.”

Luke 15 |
The Parable of the
Lost Sheep
1Now
the tax collectors and “sinners” were all gathering
around to hear him. 2But
the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered,
“This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
3Then
Jesus told them this parable:
4“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and
loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine
in the open country and go after the lost sheep
until he finds it? 5And
when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his
shoulders 6and goes
home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors
together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my
lost sheep.’ 7I tell
you that in the same way there will be more
rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than
over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to
repent.
The Parable of the
Lost Coin
8“Or
suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one.
Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and
search carefully until she finds it?
9And when she finds it,
she calls her friends and neighbors together and
says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’
10In the same way, I
tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the
angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
The Parable of the
Lost Son
11Jesus
continued: “There was a man who had two sons.
12The younger one said
to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the
estate.’ So he divided his property between them.
13“Not
long after that, the younger son got together all he
had, set off for a distant country and there
squandered his wealth in wild living.
14After he had spent
everything, there was a severe famine in that whole
country, and he began to be in need.
15So he went and hired
himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent
him to his fields to feed pigs.
16He longed to fill his
stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but
no one gave him anything. 17“When
he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my
father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am
starving to death! 18I
will set out and go back to my father and say to
him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and
against you. 19I am no
longer worthy to be called your son; make me like
one of your hired men.’ 20So
he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a
long way off, his father saw him and was filled with
compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his
arms around him and kissed him. 21“The
son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against
heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be
called your son.’ 22“But
the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the
best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his
finger and sandals on his feet.
23Bring the fattened
calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate.
24For this son of mine
was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is
found.’ So they began to celebrate. 25“Meanwhile,
the older son was in the field. When he came near
the house, he heard music and dancing.
26So he called one of
the servants and asked him what was going on.
27‘Your brother has
come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the
fattened calf because he has him back safe and
sound.’ 28“The
older brother became angry and refused to go in. So
his father went out and pleaded with him.
29But he answered his
father, ‘Look! All these years I've been slaving for
you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never
gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with
my friends. 30But when
this son of yours who has squandered your property
with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened
calf for him!’ 31“
‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me,
and everything I have is yours.
32But we had to
celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours
was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is
found.’ ”

Living Sacrifices
1Therefore,
I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to
offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and
pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of
worship. 2Do not
conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then
you will be able to test and approve what God's will
is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. 3For
by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do
not think of yourself more highly than you ought,
but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in
accordance with the measure of faith God has given
you. 4Just as each of
us has one body with many members, and these members
do not all have the same function,
5so in Christ we who
are many form one body, and each member belongs to
all the others. 6We
have different gifts, according to the grace given
us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it
in proportion to his faith.
7If it is serving, let
him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach;
8if it is encouraging,
let him encourage; if it is contributing to the
needs of others, let him give generously; if it is
leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is
showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
Love
9Love
must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is
good. 10Be devoted to
one another in brotherly love. Honor one another
above yourselves. 11Never
be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor,
serving the Lord. 12Be
joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in
prayer. 13Share with
God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
14Bless
those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
15Rejoice with those
who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
16Live in harmony with
one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to
associate with people of low position. Do not be
conceited. 17Do
not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do
what is right in the eyes of everybody.
18If it is possible, as
far as it depends on you, live at peace with
everyone. 19Do not take
revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath,
for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will
repay,”says the Lord. 20On
the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry,
feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his
head.” 21Do not be
overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Spiritual Gifts
1Now
about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you
to be ignorant. 2You
know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you
were influenced and led astray to mute idols.
3Therefore I tell you
that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God
says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus
is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4There
are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5There are different
kinds of service, but the same Lord.
6There are different
kinds of working, but the same God works all of them
in all men.
7Now
to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given
for the common good. 8To
one there is given through the Spirit the message of
wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means
of the same Spirit, 9to
another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts
of healing by that one Spirit,
10to another miraculous
powers, to another prophecy, to another
distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking
in different kinds of tongues, and to still another
the interpretation of tongues.
11All these are the
work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them
to each one, just as he determines.
12The
body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts;
and though all its parts are many, they form one
body. So it is with Christ.
13For we were all baptized by one Spirit into
one body–whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free–and
we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14Now
the body is not made up of one part but of many.
15If the foot should
say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to
the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be
part of the body. 16And
if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I
do not belong to the body,” it would not for that
reason cease to be part of the body.
17If the whole body
were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If
the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of
smell be? 18But in fact
God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of
them, just as he wanted them to be.
19If they were all one
part, where would the body be?
20As it is, there are
many parts, but one body. 21The
eye cannot say to the hand, “I don't need you!” And
the head cannot say to the feet, “I don't need you!”
22On the contrary,
those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are
indispensable, 23and
the parts that we think are less honorable we treat
with special honor. And the parts that are
unpresentable are treated with special modesty,
24while our presentable
parts need no special treatment. But God has
combined the members of the body and has given
greater honor to the parts that lacked it,
25so that there should
be no division in the body, but that its parts
should have equal concern for each other.
26If one part suffers,
every part suffers with it; if one part is honored,
every part rejoices with it. 27Now
you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a
part of it. 28And in
the church God has appointed first of all apostles,
second prophets, third teachers, then workers of
miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those
able to help others, those with gifts of
administration, and those speaking in different
kinds of tongues. 29Are
all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do
all work miracles? 30Do
all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues?
Do all interpret? 31But
eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the
most excellent way.

|
1 Corinthians 14 |
Gifts of Prophecy
and Tongues
1Follow
the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts,
especially the gift of prophecy.
2For anyone who speaks
in a tongue does not speak to men but to God.
Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries
with his spirit. 3But
everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their
strengthening, encouragement and comfort.
4He who speaks in a
tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies
edifies the church. 5I
would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but
I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies
is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he
interprets, so that the church may be edified.
6Now,
brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues,
what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some
revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of
instruction? 7Even in
the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such
as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune
is being played unless there is a distinction in the
notes? 8Again, if the
trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get
ready for battle? 9So
it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words
with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are
saying? You will just be speaking into the air.
10Undoubtedly there are
all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of
them is without meaning. 11If
then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is
saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a
foreigner to me. 12So
it is with you. Since you are eager to have
spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up
the church. 13For
this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should
pray that he may interpret what he says.
14For if I pray in a
tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
15So what shall I do? I
will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with
my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also
sing with my mind. 16If
you are praising God with your spirit, how can one
who finds himself among those who do not understand
say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not
know what you are saying? 17You
may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man
is not edified. 18I
thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of
you. 19But in the
church I would rather speak five intelligible words
to instruct others than ten thousand words in a
tongue. 20Brothers,
stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be
infants, but in your thinking be adults.
21In the Law it is
written: “Through men of strange tongues
and through the lips of foreigners I
will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me,”
says the Lord. 22Tongues,
then, are a sign, not for believers but for
unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers,
not for unbelievers. 23So
if the whole church comes together and everyone
speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or
some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you
are out of your mind? 24But
if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand
comes in while everybody is prophesying, he
will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and
will be judged by all, 25and
the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he
will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is
really among you!”
Orderly Worship
26What
then shall we say, brothers? When you come together,
everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a
revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of
these must be done for the strengthening of the
church. 27If anyone
speaks in a tongue, two–or at the most three–should
speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.
28If there is no
interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the
church and speak to himself and God. 29Two
or three prophets should speak, and the others
should weigh carefully what is said.
30And if a revelation
comes to someone who is sitting down, the first
speaker should stop. 31For
you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be
instructed and encouraged. 32The
spirits of prophets are subject to the control of
prophets. 33For God is
not a God of disorder but of peace.
As in all the congregations
of the saints, 34women
should remain silent in the churches. They are not
allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the
Law says. 35If they
want to inquire about something, they should ask
their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful
for a woman to speak in the church. 36Did
the word of God originate with you? Or are you the
only people it has reached?
37If anybody thinks he is a prophet or
spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I
am writing to you is the Lord's command.
38If he ignores this,
he himself will be ignored. 39Therefore,
my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid
speaking in tongues. 40But
everything should be done in a fitting and orderly
way.

13 |
Love
1If
I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but
have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a
clanging cymbal. 2If I
have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all
mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith
that can move mountains, but have not love, I am
nothing. 3If I give all
I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the
flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4Love
is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does
not boast, it is not proud. 5It
is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not
easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
6Love does not delight
in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8Love
never fails. But where there are prophecies, they
will cease; where there are tongues, they will be
stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass
away. 9For we know in
part and we prophesy in part,
10but when perfection comes, the imperfect
disappears. 11When I
was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a
child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man,
I put childish ways behind me.
12Now we see but a poor
reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to
face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully,
even as I am fully known. 13And
now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But
the greatest of these is love.

Imitating Christ's Humility
1If
you have any encouragement from being united with
Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any
fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and
compassion, 2then make
my joy complete by being likeminded, having the same
love, being one in spirit and purpose.
3Do nothing out of
selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility
consider others better than yourselves.
4Each of you should
look not only to your own interests, but also to the
interests of others. 5Your
attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6Who, being in very
nature God, did not consider equality with God something
to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8And being found in
appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death–even death on a cross!
9Therefore God exalted
him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every
name,
10that at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11and every tongue
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
